Have you ever seen social media posts of people brushing their teeth with black toothpaste?  Have you ever wondered how black can actually whiten your teeth? Have these people gone mad? We at Terra & Co. don’t think so! Our signature Brilliant Black Toothpaste is a blend of these high quality natural ingredients: activated charcoal, extra virgin coconut oil, baking soda, peppermint oil, tea tree oil, xylitol, diatomaceous earth, xantham gum and purified water.

Activated charcoal.  Now this isn’t the everyday, ordinary charcoal briquettes that are used as fuel in outdoor grills. Activated charcoal can be used as a form of alternative medicine and while both charcoals are carbon based, activated charcoal is made of non-toxic products and has oxygen added to it to increase its porosity.

The binding properties of activated charcoal also gives it an ability to whiten teeth.  Using activated charcoal in toothpaste has several benefits such as changing the pH balance in the mouth which helps to prevent cavities, bad breath and gum disease.  Activated charcoal also works to whiten teeth by absorbing plaque and microscopic bits that stain the teeth.

Extra-virgin coconut oil.  Coconut oil has so many uses and has grown in popularity, so much so, that you see coconut everywhere and in almost everything. Did you know that coconut oil is naturally antiviral, antibacterial, and anti fungal?  The extra-virgin coconut oil in our toothpaste also helps remove the plaque that causes gingivitis as well as whitening the teeth.

Baking soda.  Yes, this is the baking soda you find in your pantry.  So, instead of using it in muffins, we use it in our toothpaste to naturally whiten and polish your teeth.  It also helps fight the plaque that causes acid and dry mouth.

Essential oils (peppermint & tea tree).  Peppermint oil is used for its natural antiseptic properties and helps to combat bad breath. Tea tree oil has anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and disinfectant properties to help remove the bacteria that cause plaque, receding gums and tartar deposits.

Xylitol.  Xylitol is a birch-derived sugar that actually helps remineralization to strengthen the enamel and to help fight cavities.  Using xylitol in oral care helps your enamel vs. ingesting large quantities of this ingredient.

The final three ingredients are diatomaceous earth, xantham gum and purified water.  Diatomaceous earth is used to increase the cleaning power and remove plaque and tartar from your teeth.  The xantham gum is used a binding agent primarily to prevent the toothpaste from separating.  Purified water is how we get our toothpaste fluoride free.  The water goes through reverse osmosis to remove all of the fluoride.

Very importantly, what Terra & Co.'s organic charcoal toothpaste doesn't have is fluoride, SLS, peroxides, and triclosan.  We are proudly vegan, gluten & cruelty-free and are made in the USA!
