Is Aloe Vera Good for Your Teeth?

The consumption of aloe vera offers numerous health benefits, including your oral care. Your teeth will thank you for adding aloe vera to your daily routine. This natural, plant-based substance contains a wealth of nutrients and other substances that fight against the bad bacteria in your mouth, protecting it from infection and inflammation.

The anti-inflammatory properties of aloe vera

One of the reasons why aloe vera is good for your teeth is its anti-inflammatory properties. One clinical study evaluated the effects of an aloe vera mouth rinse on patients with gingivitis. Forty-five patients were divided into three groups. Group One rinsed with aloe vera twice daily for three months. Group Two only received scaling treatment, and Group Three received both aloe vera mouth rinse and scaling.

Although all three groups demonstrated improvements, the group that rinsed with aloe vera and received scaling treatment showed the most marked improvement. Further tests were performed on the composition of aloe vera, and researchers found that the substance has significant anti-inflammatory properties.

Not only is aloe vera helpful for reversing gingivitis, which is the earliest stage of gum disease, but it can also help patients in the more advanced. The use of aloe vera gel can help soothe the painful, swollen gums associated with periodontitis, and treat the associated infection.

The antibacterial properties of aloe vera

Your mouth is teeming with bacteria. Every time you consume foods and liquids that contain sugars or starches, you’re feeding it in your mouth. As these bacteria feed, they release acids which in turn can attack the enamel on your teeth, eventually causing cavities.

Aloe vera fights back against cavities thanks to its antibacterial properties. In fact, the antimicrobial activity of aloe vera is highly effective at fighting back against a range of harmful bacteria, including Streptococcus mutans, Enterococcus faecalis, and Streptococcus mitis.

How aloe vera can protect you from bad breath

Although using aloe vera juice as a mouth rinse is good for your teeth and gums, its benefits don’t stop there. Consuming aloe vera can help fight bad breath. It is often caused by gastric reflux, which occurs when stomach acid travels up the esophagus and into the back of the throat. Since aloe vera is an anti-inflammatory, it can help soothe this condition.

What to know before you try it

It’s always a good idea to talk to your doctor before consuming a new health supplement. If you intend to swallow aloe vera, rather than use it as a mouth rinse, you should know that it may not be appropriate for people with diabetes. In addition, women who are pregnant, could be pregnant, or are breastfeeding should speak with their Ob/Gyn before consuming aloe it.
